The Topstep Consistency Rule, Explained Properly (It Doesn't Fail You)

Published 2026-08-07 · Rules verified weekly

Most traders learn about Topstep's consistency rule the hard way: they post a big day, panic when they read the rule, and assume the account is gone.

It isn't. Breaking the consistency rule does not fail your account. It raises the amount you need to earn. That distinction is the difference between quitting and passing.

What the rule actually says

Topstep's own wording is that your single best day of profit must stay at or below 50% of your profit target.

Two details matter and both are commonly misread:

On a 50K Trading Combine with a $3,000 target, your cap is $1,500. A day of exactly $1,500 passes.

The math when you go over

Say you have a $2,400 day on that 50K account. Your target does not stay at $3,000 — it becomes twice your best day:

$2,400 × 2 = $4,800 total profit required

You have not failed. You need $1,800 more than you originally did. That is the entire penalty.

Why the fastest legal pass is two days

Because the rule is inclusive, the minimum number of days to pass a 50K Combine is two:

DayProfitRunning total
1$1,500$1,500
2$1,500$3,000 ✅

Your best day is $1,500, exactly 50% of the $3,000 target. Rule satisfied, target met.

Anyone telling you a one-day pass is possible at Topstep is wrong — the consistency rule makes it mathematically impossible, because a single $3,000 day would be 100% of the target.

The mistake that actually costs people

The real damage isn't the rule — it's what traders do *after* they break it. They see the raised target, feel behind, and start sizing up to catch up. That's how a delayed pass turns into a blown account through the trailing drawdown, which *is* a hard fail.

If you go over: keep your normal size, accept the longer runway, and let the days accumulate.
